Cade Cunningham has been upgraded to doubtful

Cade Cunningham is making real progress. The Pistons star has been upgraded from out to doubtful — a meaningful step forward after suffering a collapsed lung (left lung pneumothorax) when he dove for a loose ball and collided with Wizards guard Tre Johnson on March 17.

The injury was initially terrifying. A collapsed lung can be career-altering in worst-case scenarios. But Cunningham's case was mild, and the Pistons' medical staff has been cautiously optimistic throughout. He's been recovering under close supervision and is now cleared to ramp up activity.

Detroit's front office is targeting the playoff opener on April 18 for his return. The Pistons have already clinched a postseason spot, so there's no reason to rush him back for meaningless late-season games. If Cunningham can return at full strength, Detroit goes from a feel-good story to a legitimate threat in the East.
