Joel Embiid's body has betrayed him again — and this time it's not even basketball-related. The 76ers star was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent emergency surgery Thursday afternoon in Houston after reporting stomach pain to the team's medical staff around 3 AM.

The timing is almost poetic in its cruelty. Philadelphia is the 8-seed at 43-37, clinging to playoff life with two games remaining. Embiid had already missed more games than he'd played this season, and now appendicitis adds yet another chapter to what might be the most cursed injury history in NBA history. Bell's palsy. Recovery from an appendectomy typically takes 3-6 weeks. NBA players who've had the procedure have missed an average of 23 days.
