Joel Embiid Diagnosed With Appendicitis, Undergoing Surgery in Houston

Just when you thought Joel Embiid injury luck could not get any worse, the universe said hold my beer. The 76ers star has been diagnosed with appendicitis and is undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon in Houston. He was suddenly added to the injury report before the Sixers game against the Rockets with an illness — and hours later, Shams Charania confirmed it was appendicitis.

Embiid has played just 38 games this season, with most of his absences tied to knee injury management. The Sixers are eighth in the East, clinging to a play-in spot and just one game behind sixth-place Toronto. Based on recent NBA precedent, appendectomies typically sideline players for five to six weeks — which would effectively end Embiid regular season and potentially his playoff hopes.

ESPN Tim MacMahon called Embiid the unluckiest superstar of this generation, and honestly, it is hard to argue. A torn meniscus, orbital fractures, a torn ligament in his thumb, chronic knee issues, and now appendicitis. The talent has never been in question. The body just will not cooperate. Philadelphia postseason dreams just took another devastating hit.
