Embiid Discharged From Hospital — But Sixers Head to Play-In Without Him
Joel Embiid was released from the hospital on Friday following his emergency appendectomy in Houston. The 76ers announced that their franchise center underwent surgery Thursday after waking up around 3 a.m. feeling ill, and the diagnosis came quickly: appendicitis.
There's no timeline for Embiid's return to basketball activities. Recovery from an appendectomy typically takes 2-4 weeks, which means Embiid would almost certainly miss the Play-In Tournament (starting April 14) and likely the first round of the playoffs if Philadelphia even gets that far.
The Sixers lost to the Rockets 113-102 on Thursday without Embiid, and now they're staring down the Play-In as an 8-seed without their best player. This is the most Sixers thing that could possibly happen. Embiid has dealt with torn meniscus, plantar fasciitis, orbital fractures, and a knee injury that cost him an entire season. Now appendicitis. The man cannot catch a break, and neither can Philly fans who've watched this story repeat itself every April for years.
