Embiid Out After Emergency Appendectomy — Postseason Status in Doubt
Joel Embiid underwent an emergency appendectomy at a Houston hospital on Thursday after waking up around 3-3:30 AM feeling ill. The surgery was successful, and Embiid was discharged on Friday — but the 76ers have set no timeline for his return to basketball activities.
The timing could not be worse. Philadelphia is in the thick of the playoff race, and previous NBA players who've had appendectomies — including Grant Hill and OG Anunoby — have missed an average of 23 days during recovery. That math puts Embiid's potential return well past the Play-In Tournament (April 14-17) and likely into the first round of the playoffs at the earliest.
This is the latest chapter in what's become the most absurd injury history in NBA history. Embiid has now officially missed more games than he's played in his career, and adding appendicitis to a resume that includes a torn meniscus, orbital fractures, Bell's palsy, and a torn LCL is almost too much to believe. The Sixers need him — but the basketball gods keep saying no.
