Giannis says he's healthy and wants to play
This is one of the strangest situations in the NBA right now. Giannis Antetokounmpo says he's healthy. The Milwaukee Bucks say he's not medically cleared. And the NBA is caught in the middle, investigating.
Giannis has missed 11 straight games with what the Bucks are calling a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise sustained on March 15. But Antetokounmpo told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Athletic that he wants to play and believes he's ready. He informed the league directly that the team is holding him out against his wishes.
The NBA's Player Participation Policy investigation found that the Bucks scheduled Giannis to work out in three-on-three scrimmages as part of his return-to-play process, but he declined to participate. So who's telling the truth?
With a four-year, $275 million extension eligible in October, there's a lot more at stake than a few regular-season games. The Bucks are trying to protect their franchise player. Giannis is trying to prove he's still their franchise player. Something has to give.
