Michael Malone is leaving the Nuggets to become UNC's head coach
Michael Malone is heading to Chapel Hill. The longtime Denver Nuggets head coach — the man who led Jokic and company to the 2023 championship — has accepted the head coaching job at the University of North Carolina, becoming the first outsider hired there since 1952.
The decision is deeply personal. Malone's daughter plays volleyball at UNC, and he's said publicly that it was the only college job he'd ever consider taking. After 11 seasons in Denver, including a title and multiple deep playoff runs, he's walking away from the NBA entirely.
For the Nuggets, the timing is jarring. Denver just jumped to the 3-seed in the West and looked like a dangerous playoff team. Now they'll need to find a new voice in the locker room with barely a week before the postseason. The coaching search starts immediately — and the pressure to get it right is immense with Jokic's prime window still open.
