Wemby Wants Unanimous DPOY. He Says He'd Be 'Surprised' If He Doesn't Get It.

A reporter asked Victor Wembanyama: "For Defensive Player of the Year, it's consensus you're going to get it. It's just a matter of whether you win it unanimously. Would you be surprised if you are not the unanimous winner?" Wemby paused. Then he said: "Yes. I would."

That's not arrogance. That's a 22-year-old who knows exactly how dominant he's been. And the numbers back him up completely. Wemby lineups this season have been more dominant than any regular season from LeBron, Shaq, Kobe, or Jokic. Read that again. More dominant than peak Shaq. More dominant than 2013 LeBron. At 22.

He's also coming off a historic duel with Cooper Flagg where he led the Spurs past the Mavericks, reminding everyone that the "generational talent" label gets thrown around too easily — unless it's applied to Wemby, in which case it might be an understatement. The man is a 7'4" force field on defense and an offensive weapon that shouldn't be legal. Unanimous DPOY? He's got a point.
