Kelsey Plum Took a Pay Cut to Make the Sparks Real. Clark Is the First Test.

Kelsey Plum left $400,000 on the table in April. She signed a $999,999 deal with the Los Angeles Sparks rather than chase a $1.4 million supermax, explicitly to give the franchise cap room to build a legitimate contender. Wednesday night at Crypto.com Arena, that bet gets its first serious examination — and the one doing the examining is Plum's own Team USA teammate, Caitlin Clark.

The Sparks used that cap flexibility to land Nneka Ogwumike, a 10-time All-Star returning to Los Angeles after a decade away. ESPN's Kendra Andrews has already tabbed Plum as a top-three MVP candidate this season. Clark, meanwhile, opened 2026 last Friday with 20 points and seven assists in a 107-104 loss to Dallas — a performance that was good without being great, with five turnovers and a 2-of-9 night from three still clouding the picture.

The Clark-Plum matchup carries a subplot the box score won't capture. They practiced together in December 2025 as part of the 2026 USA Basketball World Cup qualifying camp, alongside Angel Reese. On Wednesday they're opponents at Crypto.com Arena, two of the best point guards in the world settling something informal. Clark is trying to reassert herself after 296 days away. Plum wagered her own paycheck that the Sparks were ready for this moment.
